Become A Teacher
Overview
At Safe Harbor Boys Home, education is more than academics — it’s restoration. Many of our young men arrive having fallen behind in school or struggling to see their own potential. We’re looking for a mission-driven Academic Instructor who can bring patience, creativity, and vision to help rebuild our education program and guide each student toward growth.
This part-time position (20–30 hours per week) is ideal for an educator who feels called to integrate faith, structure, and hands-on learning in a unique maritime setting. You’ll have the opportunity to lead Safe Harbor’s academic program, shaping curriculum, setting standards, and helping each student work toward meaningful educational achievement.

About the Role
The Academic Instructor oversees and teaches Safe Harbor’s classroom-based education program, blending traditional academics with practical learning and personal development. This is both a teaching and leadership position — ideal for someone who wants to help design and grow an educational system that serves students individually while advancing Safe Harbor’s mission.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead classroom instruction for students ages 14–17 in core subjects (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies)
- Develop and adapt curriculum to meet students’ varying academic levels
- Create individualized learning plans and track student progress
- Build a positive, structured, and engaging learning environment
- Integrate faith, mentorship, and character development into daily lessons
- Coordinate educational schedules, testing, and assessments
- Collaborate with residential and vocational staff to ensure academic support aligns with overall program goals
- Provide direction for the continued development of Safe Harbor’s education department, including curriculum organization, assessment tools, and long-term academic vision
You’ll serve as both a teacher and an educational leader — ensuring each student receives the academic support and encouragement needed to thrive.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking an educator who views teaching as ministry — someone who finds purpose in mentoring, motivating, and equipping young men to succeed in school and life.
Ideal Qualifications:
- A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and alignment with Safe Harbor’s mission and Statement of Faith
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (education or related field)
- Teaching certification or experience working with high school–aged students preferred
- Experience developing or managing curriculum and individualized education plans
- Strong classroom management and ability to teach multiple skill levels simultaneously
- Patience, organization, and a relational teaching style
- Experience in faith-based, alternative, or residential
education settings is a plus
