Safe Harbor Boys Home is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization recognized by the IRS since 1984, with more than four decades devoted to helping young men build stronger, more purposeful lives. Located in Florida, Safe Harbor offers a distinctive environment where boys are challenged and encouraged to grow into men of character, integrity, responsibility, and vision.

Each boy receives personal guidance from dedicated staff members who serve as mentors, teachers, and positive role models throughout daily life. Through meaningful responsibilities, practical skills, structured activities, education, and consistent encouragement, boys learn the value of accountability, perseverance, teamwork, and service. Staff members do more than simply supervise—they work alongside the boys, investing time and attention in their growth while helping them develop the confidence, maturity, and life skills needed to move forward with purpose.

Through hands-on experience, boys will learn the importance of responsibility by living and working on a boat. This maritime setting offers a platform for success, teaching them essential skills such as captaining their own vessel. Safe Harbor serves boys with a wide range of personalities and backgrounds who may struggle with excessive digital use, attention difficulties, relationship conflicts, behavioral or academic challenges, and other life circumstances that have affected personal well-being and family relationships, providing compassionate counseling, mentoring, structure, and guidance from a dedicated team committed to helping each boy build a healthier, more confident, and promising future.

Safe Harbor provides a unique, structured environment where boys develop essential life skills and values—including responsibility, self-respect, respect for others, accountability, and a strong work ethic—while gaining hands-on vocational training and practical experience designed to prepare them for greater independence, meaningful opportunities, and future success.

Established in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1984, Safe Harbor Boys Home is a residential program that uses the waterfront as a therapeutic residential and educational environment for troubled teenage boys. Our program has been successful in providing the mental, physical, and spiritual strength required to transform the lives of every boy we serve. 

The story of Safe Harbor began when a local juvenile judge approached founders Robbie and Doug Smith with an unusual request: take a troubled boy aboard their sailboat for the weekend rather than have him sent to juvenile hall. The Smiths were retired and preparing to embark on a worldwide sailing adventure, but the judge—a friend of Doug’s—was persistent. What began as a single act of compassion soon led to additional requests to help other struggling boys, ultimately changing the course of the Smiths’ lives and giving rise to Safe Harbor Boys Home as a nonprofit organization.

Over the decades, that simple beginning grew into a distinctive maritime-based residential program and school where the waterfront itself became an important part of the learning experience. Today, Safe Harbor combines structured residential living, education, counseling, mentoring, vocational training, and seamanship to help boys who are struggling at home, in school, or with behavioral and legal challenges. Through hands-on experience aboard and around vessels, boys learn responsibility, teamwork, discipline, practical maritime skills, and a strong work ethic while continuing their education toward a high school diploma—carrying forward the same spirit of guidance, opportunity, and second chances that inspired Safe Harbor from the beginning.

The continuing story of Safe Harbor is made possible by people who believe that a young man’s past should not determine his future. Every contribution helps provide the resources, opportunities, and personal support needed to reach boys at a critical point in their lives.
