Vocational Education
Vocational Education
At Safe Harbor Boys Home, education extends beyond the classroom into the workshop, docks, and waterways. Our vocational education program provides cadets with opportunities to develop practical skills, a strong work ethic, and hands-on experience through guided projects that prepare them for success in life and work. As cadets take on real responsibilities — maintaining vessels, repairing facilities, and working on campus projects — they learn discipline, dependability, and pride in a job well done.
These experiences instill lasting lessons about integrity, perseverance, and leadership, shaping boys into confident young men prepared for the challenges of life and employment.
“Work is not punishment — it’s preparation.”

Skill Areas and Training Opportunities
Safe Harbor provides exposure to a variety of vocational disciplines that allow cadets to discover their interests and talents.
Examples include:
- Boat care and marine maintenance (engine repair, fiberglass, and hull work)
- Boat operation, navigation, and sailing
- Marine electrical systems and small engine repair
- Welding and metal fabrication
- Diesel and gasoline mechanics
- Canvas and upholstery work
- Carpentry and general construction
- Culinary arts and kitchen operations
- Basic plumbing, painting, and facility maintenance
- Marine logistics and operational support
Note: Skill areas vary by season, instructor availability, and campus projects. Not all cadets will participate in every area listed.
Maritime Industry & Workforce Relevance
Safe Harbor’s vocational program connects directly to real-world opportunities. Graduates leave with the confidence and competence to pursue entry-level work, apprenticeships, or further education in the trades or maritime industry.
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) continues to report workforce shortages, including an estimated 1,800 mariner shortfall across the national fleet. Likewise, the construction and skilled-trade sectors face an ongoing need for qualified workers.
By combining academic instruction with vocational experience, Safe Harbor equips cadets with the skills, discipline, and readiness needed to thrive in these high-demand fields.
