Program Overview
Serving At-Risk Young Men Since 1984
For over 40 years, Safe Harbor Boys Home has helped at-risk young men find purpose, discipline, and direction through a structured, Christ-centered maritime program in Jacksonville, Florida, located on the St. Johns River.
Safe Harbor provides an environment built on faith, education, and accountability, guiding boys toward maturity and self-reliance. Each cadet participates in a balanced program that includes Academics, Vocational Training, and Spiritual Growth—all supported by a focus on family restoration and relational growth.

Our Mission
The mission of Safe Harbor Boys Home is to provide a caring, loving, and disciplined atmosphere to instill self-esteem, responsibility, and reliability in the boys. We endeavor to assist each young man in becoming responsible, mature, and independent through spiritual, educational, and vocational training.
Our goal is to teach them to live and work in harmony with others—to be accepting and tolerant of their fellow man without compromising truth—or, in short, to become mature.
We believe maturity is demonstrated by the ability:
- To know God and enjoy a personal relationship with Him.
- To commit to a task until it is finished.
- To bear an injustice without seeking revenge.
- To handle money wisely without spending it impulsively.
- To do one’s duty faithfully without being supervised.

Residential Life
Coastal Living in River City
At Safe Harbor Boys Home, life happens on the water. Our campus sits along the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, where each young man lives aboard his own vessel in our protected harbor. This unique waterfront setting teaches independence, responsibility, and teamwork in ways few environments can. Daily life blends the rhythm of maritime living—tidal changes, deck chores, and boat upkeep—with moments of reflection and community. The harbor becomes both classroom and home, offering calm waters for learning, growth, and restoration.

What Sets Us Apart
For more than forty years, Safe Harbor has combined structure, faith, and maritime living to transform young lives. The water itself is central to our mission—offering both peace and challenge while shaping character and perseverance.
More than sixty donated vessels line our docks, serving as homes, classrooms, and training platforms. Through the care of these boats,
cadets learn practical seamanship, teamwork, and stewardship—skills that translate far beyond the water.
While our foundation in Christian principles remains steadfast, our methods continue to evolve. We embrace new technologies, trades, and opportunities that prepare each young man for success anchored by faith and built on the timeless lessons of life at sea.
Bridging Academic and Extracurricular Activities
Each day at Safe Harbor begins with wisdom from the Biblical book of Proverbs, guiding both students and staff. Our team is trained to share faith-based mentorship in everyday settings, helping cadets apply biblical truth to real-life choices.
In addition to academics and maritime instruction, every young man participates in hands-on vocational training and life-skills development—learning to drive, manage finances, interview for jobs, and care for himself and others.
Cadets maintain academic progress and positive behavior to earn privileges such as boating, fishing, or surfing. Responsibility and respect are reinforced daily, ensuring that each student learns the connection between discipline, trust, and freedom.
Academics
At Safe Harbor Boys Home, academics are a cornerstone of personal growth. Our goal is to help each young man recover, rebuild, and excel—academically, vocationally, and spiritually. We meet every student where he is and guide him toward achieving his Florida High School Diploma or equivalent credential, preparing him for success in work, higher education, or military service.

Registered Private School in Florida
Safe Harbor operates as a registered private school with the State of Florida. We provide a structured academic program designed to meet each cadet’s individual learning needs, emphasizing both mastery of core subjects and the development of lifelong learning skills.
Our academic philosophy is built on the belief that education is a lifelong process that happens in every area of life. Each cadet learns differently, and by recognizing his unique learning style, we help him gain confidence and experience success in the classroom and beyond.
Classroom Education
The Safe Harbor academic program is specifically structured to prepare boys to earn their high school diploma or equivalent credential. Our curriculum emphasizes the four core subjects:
- Mathematics
- Science
- English / Language Arts
- Social Studies
Instruction is tailored through small class sizes, tutoring, and guided study hall sessions four nights per week. This flexible model allows students to advance at their own pace, customizing their education to best prepare them for their future. Our academic education program is designed to allow them ample time to participate in vocational training, maritime instruction, and community service.
“We teach boys to value learning—not just to pass a test, but to prepare for life.”
Academic Core Courses & Schedule
- Instruction: four days per week
- Study Hall: supervised four nights per week (required if academic goals are not met)
- Experiential Learning: reinforces academic concepts through maritime and vocational work
- Flexible Block Scheduling: designed to prevent burnout and balance learning with hands-on activity
- Spiritual Integration: biblical principles woven into every subject area
- Character Emphasis: personal values, integrity, and wisdom taught daily in the classroom and throughout the program
Graduating cadets often continue on to two-year and four-year colleges, trade schools, or military service—equipped with both the academic knowledge and life skills to succeed.
Vocational Education
At Safe Harbor Boys Home, education extends beyond the classroom into the workshop, docks, and waterways. Our vocational education program provides cadets with opportunities to develop practical skills, a strong work ethic, and hands-on experience through guided projects that prepare them for success in life and work. As cadets take on real responsibilities — maintaining vessels, repairing facilities, and working on campus projects — they learn discipline, dependability, and pride in a job well done.
These experiences instill lasting lessons about integrity, perseverance, and leadership, shaping boys into confident young men prepared for the challenges of life and employment.
“Work is not punishment — it’s preparation.”

Skill Areas and Training Opportunities
Safe Harbor provides exposure to a variety of vocational disciplines that allow cadets to discover their interests and talents.
Examples include:
- Boat care and marine maintenance (engine repair, fiberglass, and hull work)
- Boat operation, navigation, and sailing
- Marine electrical systems and small engine repair
- Welding and metal fabrication
- Diesel and gasoline mechanics
- Canvas and upholstery work
- Carpentry and general construction
- Culinary arts and kitchen operations
- Basic plumbing, painting, and facility maintenance
- Marine logistics and operational support
Note: Skill areas vary by season, instructor availability, and campus projects. Not all cadets will participate in every area listed.
Maritime Industry & Workforce Relevance
Safe Harbor’s vocational program connects directly to real-world opportunities. Graduates leave with the confidence and competence to pursue entry-level work, apprenticeships, or further education in the trades or maritime industry.
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) continues to report workforce shortages, including an estimated 1,800 mariner shortfall across the national fleet. Likewise, the construction and skilled-trade sectors face an ongoing need for qualified workers.
By combining academic instruction with vocational experience, Safe Harbor equips cadets with the skills, discipline, and readiness needed to thrive in these high-demand fields.

Spiritual Growth
Safe Harbor Boys Home believes that each individual must make his own decision regarding faith. Every boy at Safe Harbor is instructed daily from the practical wisdom of the Biblical book of Proverbs, learning timeless lessons about character, responsibility, and integrity.
All staff members are trained to offer spiritual advice and wisdom in everyday settings as well as during times of crisis. Faith is not forced—it’s modeled through daily living, mentorship, and community.
Safe Harbor Boys Home is an interdenominational Christian ministry. We believe in the Bible’s teachings, both Old and New Testaments, and our staff is composed of dedicated Christian individuals who care deeply for every boy entrusted to our program. Boys from different religious backgrounds, or those with little or no faith influence, are welcomed and treated with the same love and respect. No child is ever required to convert or conform in order to succeed.
We are a Christ-centered ministry, and we firmly believe that this is why Safe Harbor has succeeded in changing lives for more than 40 years. Since its inception, the Safe Harbor program has given each boy the mental, physical, and spiritual strength to grow into maturity and purpose.
Safe Harbor does not require any student to accept our beliefs, nor do we ever “force” faith or limit anyone who chooses not to believe. Instead, our approach is to live out the Gospel through action—offering care, encouragement, and biblical truth in an atmosphere of grace.
